The Screen-Printing Department: Technical Evolution and Specialized Expertise Since 1989

Screen printing represents MCS’s first true production process – a milestone that marked the company’s transformation from a pure PCB Master design firm into a specialized manufacturing centre.

It was 1989 when, thanks to the collaboration with a “master of silk screen printer” – as we still respectfully call him today – who had gained experience in the demanding German market, the company embarked on this path.

The initial choice to invest in second-hand equipment reflected the entrepreneurial prudence of the time, but also confidence in a process that, despite its apparent simplicity, requires skill, experience, and vision (more than cutting-edge technology).

The Screen-Printing Process: Technical Precision and Quality Control

Screen printing is a technology that, in essence, transfers ink through a fine mesh screen onto a substrate. However, this simple definition hardly captures the technical complexity and the high level of control required in an industrial environment.

In-House Screen Preparation: A Guarantee of Quality

At MCS, all screen frames are prepared internally through a photographic imaging process.
This approach ensures:

  • Total control over stencil quality;
  • Micrometric precision in defining ink passage areas;
  • Absolute repeatability for series production;
  • Rapid response times for design changes or new implementations.

The open areas of the mesh – the “uncoated screen” – determine the selective passage of ink, allowing the desired graphic to be transferred onto the substrate.

Ink Versatility: Tailored Solutions for Every Industrial Need

Our screen-printing department uses a wide range of ink formulations, each optimized for specific applications:

  • Solvent-based inks: for applications requiring maximum adhesion and chemical resistance;
  • UV-curable inks: instant polymerization for faster, more flexible production, ideal for film materials;
  • Conductive inks: essential for creating circuits in membrane keyboards.

Production Capabilities: From Flat Sheets to 3D Components

The versatility of our screen-printing department is reflected in its ability to process a wide variety of materials and geometries.

Film materials (sheet form):

  • Polyester and polycarbonate: for overlays, labels, and flexible circuits;
  • PVC and adhesive materials: for simple label applications.

    Rigid sheets:

    • Anodized aluminium and coated metals: for front panels, rack panels, and electronic enclosures;
    • PMMA (plexiglass) and polycarbonate: for transparent applications;
    • Rigid PVC, HIPS, ABS, etc., in various standard colours;
    • Stainless steel: for metalwork panels and enclosures.

      Printing on three-dimensional objects:
      One of our department’s distinctive skills is the ability to print directly onto formed metal housings and enclosures for electronics.
      This eliminates the need for adhesive labels after production, ensuring a permanent, professional marking directly integrated into the product.

      The Team: Experience and Specialization Serving Quality

      Reparto di stampa serigrafica di MCS DUE - 2

      Three specialized technicians work in the department, each with many years of experience. This stability guarantees:

      • Consistent quality across production runs;
      • Consolidated know-how for solving technical challenges;
      • Process optimization through accumulated experience;
      • Continuous training on new technologies and materials.

      Screen printing requires not only technical knowledge but also manual skill, precision, and attention to detail – qualities that can only be developed through years of direct experience and genuine passion.

      Sector Specialization: A Strategic Choice

      While many competitors have diversified into advertising graphics, promotional printing, or textiles, MCS has made a deliberate strategic choice: to remain exclusively focused on the electronics and instrumentation industry.

      This specialization brings concrete advantages for our customers:

      • Technical expertise specific to electronic applications;
      • In-depth knowledge of industrial standards and regulations;
      • Careful selection of materials and inks compliant with electronic requirements;
      • The ability to communicate effectively with engineers and designers, speaking the same technical language.

        Screen Printing and Digital Printing: A Strategic Complementarity

        A common question concerns the relationship between screen printing and digital printing.

        At MCS, we operate both technologies – and our answer is clear: they are complementary, not competing processes.

        Unique Advantages of Screen Printing

        Superior colour performance

        • Metallic colours;
        • Fluorescent tones;
        • Fully opaque inks;
        • High chromatic accuracy with RAL and Pantone references;
        • Perfectly uniform solid colours (unlike digital printing, where colours are created from dense CMYK dots, always slightly visible).

          Exclusive technical functionalities

          • Conductive inks for flexible printed circuits;
          • Full control over ink chemistry for compatibility with diverse materials and substrates;
          • Resistance to solvents and aggressive chemicals;
          • UV stability for outdoor applications.

          When Screen Printing Is the Optimal Choice

          Screen printing proves technically and economically advantageous for:

          • Series production with identical graphics and limited colour ranges;
          • Flat colour graphics without photographic gradients;
          • Applications requiring extreme durability;
          • Metallic or fluorescent effects not reproducible digitally;
          • Difficult substrates requiring specific inks.

          Practical Applications in the MCS Portfolio

          Industrial membrane keyboards
          Screen printing is the core technology behind our membrane keyboard production. It enables:

          • Reverse-side (second surface) printing on polyester and polycarbonate for maximum protection;
          • Precise, repeatable deposition of silver conductive tracks;
          • Permanent readability even after millions of actuations;
          • Transparent coatings for display areas.

            Front panels and customized enclosures
            For electronic housings, screen printing allows professional customizations such as:

            • Corporate logos with exact Pantone/RAL matching;
            • Aesthetic and functional personalization;
            • Technical symbols;
            • Graduated scales;
            • Connection schematics.

              Added Value for Our Customers
